Judgment on environmental permit postponed until 6 May 2024

The Land and Environment Court at Umeå District Court today announced that a judgment in the case regarding Copperstone’s application for a permit under the Environmental Code for a reopening of the Viscaria copper mine in Kiruna is expected on 6 May 2024 at 13.00, and not on 22 April 2024 as previously announced. The proceedings have been delayed due to a late received statement from the County Administrative Board (Länsstyrelsen) in Norrbotten.

“During the main hearing, Länsstyrelsen approved our application on the condition that the permit be combined with certain conditions. The proposed conditions were in line with our ambitions and expectations. Länsstyrelsen still approves our application, but requests that the court imposes additional conditions. It is of course surprising that it comes so late in the process, but we have high confidence in our application and the process in the Land and Environment Court. We look forward to the judgment. Our timetable for a reopening in 2026 remains unchanged,” said Jörgen Olsson, CEO of Copperstone Resources.

Documents in the case, including Copperstone’s response to Länsstyrelsen’s statement, are published on the company’s website under the Permit Portal tab: https://copperstone.se/tillstandsportal/
